Ron Santo Tribute Books, and DVD's

Ron Santo, the beloved Cubs annnouncer and "Hall of Fame Caliber" former third baseman passed away during the offseason, and from the first spring training practice session his presence was already missed. Santo was a Cub, through and through. He became the Cubs radio announcer in 1990, and he immediately rekindled the love affair between him and his fans.

"You can have all the talent in the world. It's not going to get your through. It's what you have in your heart"!

Ron Santo

"This Old Cub", is an uplifting tribute of Santo, who overcame many obstacles on his way to becoming the legendary Cubs player, broadcaster, and fan! Santo was the first known baseball player to play MLB baseball with insulin dependant type 1 diabetes. During a time when diabetes wasn't controlled as well as it is today, Santo rarely missed a game. He talks about how he would take injections and eating chocolate purely based on how his body felt at the time. "This Old Cub" embodies the spirit of a man's will to achieve, an eternal optimist, and his love for the Chicago Cubs.

Ron Santo passed away on Dec. 3rd, and his friends, family, and fans already miss him dearly. During the pregame ceremony on March 10th the Cubs honored Santo, by presenting a plaque in dedication of Ron Santo's life and career with with Cubs organization.

Santo was the Cubs broadcaster for 21 years, and was Hall of Fame caliber (hopefully one day will be included in the Hall) player for the Cubs and finished his career with 1,331 RBI's, 2,254 base hits, 342 home runs, and was a nine time all star.

Jeff Santo was honored by the presentation. He said that sometimes he gets overwhelmed with mixed emotions. He feels proud to honor him, but his family (and fans) miss him very much.

Cub fans wore #10 hats (Ron Santo's number he wore when he played for the Cubs), and there was #10 painted behind home plate. Fans at HoHoKam Park recieve a #10 sticker, along with a Santo baseball card with a photo of Santo in Spring Training back in 1965.

Ron Santo - A True Die Hard Fan

The passing of Ron Santo is a heartbreaking loss to Cub fans all over the world. Ronnie brought an enthusiasm and passion for the game that will be sorely missed.

I can't remember how many times that I have turned down the volume to the WGN broadcast and turned up the radio to listen to Pat and Ron bring the game into my living room. It wasn't Ron's analytical broadcast skills that won my heart over. It was Ron's love for the game, and love for the Chicago Cubs. I can still hear Ron wail in agony "Ohhhhh, noooooo", when Brant Brown dropped that critical ball in a critical game on September 24th 1998 with the Cubs tied with the mets for the Wildcard race.

Every season, Ron Santo would proclaim "This is the Cubs year, I really believe that." I believe without a shred of any doubt that Ron truly did believe this. Despite a century of heartbreaks, and heartaches Ron Santo never lost his boyish enthusiasm and hope for the Cubs to win the World Series.

Ron Santo never let his health issues stemming from diabetes control his life. Ron Santo battled his fight with diabetes and cancer the same way he performed as a third baseman and broadcaster for the Chicago Cubs. Like a true champion.

It's a shame that Ron Santo was never inducted into the Hall of Fame, but in the minds of Chicago Cub fans he has always been a hall of famer.
