Lilly, Zambrano Lead Cubs Past Brewers To Set The Pace

Coming into this important divisional series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the media didn't seem to give the Cubs much of a chance. The Cubs had been reeling during the second half of the season, while the Brewers have gotten red hot and erased a 6 game deficit in the standings.

Ted Lilly and Carlos Zambrano matched CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets pitch for pitch, leading the Cubs to victories in the first two games of a four game series. Now, after the first two games of the series (against Sabathia and Sheets) the Cubs have built a three game lead in the standings, with Dempster and Hardin still to pitch in this "playoff like atmosphere" divisional series matchup. Kosuke Fukudome seems to be coming out of a month long slump, getting key hits, and overall looking much more comfortable at the plate. The Cubs lineup tends to follow Fukudome's plate discipline. Early in the season, when Fukudome was getting on base at a .450 OBA clip, the entire lineup seemed to take more pitches and ultimately get better pitches to hit. When Fukudome began to lunge at pitches out of his zone, the other players in the Cubs lineup seemed to follow suit. With the St. Louis Cardinals continuing to surprise the National League, and the Chicago Cubs trying to persevere through a rash of injuries, the Cubs hold on to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-5.

The Cubs hope to have Carlos Zambrano back for this very important weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The starting staff has been shaky at best, and the Cubs need their ace to return to form to anchor the rotation. With Alphonso Soriano out until the all star break, and Aramis Ramirez just returning to the team after a personal absence, the Cubs need some strong pitching to maintain their lead over St. Louis.

Sean Gallagher has a tremendous arm with a lot of potential, but his starting performances have been unpredictable. Gallagher starts tonight, and if he faulters he may be demoted to the bullpen. Look for Jeff Samardzija to be called up sometime after the all star break to help bolster the Cubs starting rotation. Samardzia has been impressive in his first two starts after being promoted to AAA Iowa.

Zambrano Loses Temper as so do the Cubs

Carlos Zambrano is a fierce competitor with the passion to when. There is no questioning this, but does his composure on the mound sometimes get the best of him? My answer is yes, it does.

Zambrano left the mound with his lips quenched just trying to hold back the rage building within. Upon reaching the dugout, Zambrano unleashed his frustrations on the gatorade coolers. Repeatedly slamming the coolers to the ground, and kicking them as if they were a soccer ball.

Zambrano needs to harness his competitive edge and understand that there will be miscues behind him, but its up to him to not lose focus. The Cubs need Carlos Zambrano to be their "ace". Cubs Hang On To First Place - Carlos Zambrano Jersey

Despite dropping the last two games to the Houston Astros, the Chicago Cubs hold on to first place in the National League Central Division.

Carlos Zambrano hopes to get the Cubs back to their winning ways with a strong performance tomorrow against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs recently traded for Jim Edmonds. I really have mixed feelings about this addition. If he can hit .270 with some occasional power I think it will be a positive addition. Yet so far with the Padres, and now with the Cubs, Edmonds hasn't been able to hit a lick. Is the tank on empty? Lets hope not. I couldn't stand Jim Edmonds while he was a cardinal, and so far my feelings haven't changed. Hopefully he will force me to have a change of heart.

One of the bright spots has been the cubs Carlos Marmol, and Kerry Wood. If the Cubs can hold a lead through 7 innings, you have to like our chances. Kerry Wood is really attacking the hitters and throwing first pitch strikes. Let's hope Kerry's success continues and the Cubs can open up some daylight in the central division.

Ted Lilly - Pitching Woes Continue

To overtake the Brewers and the Cardinals, the Cubs need to find somebody that can give the Cubs some consistent quality starts. Luckily for the Cubs, their offense has been swinging the bats and has kept them in some games that could of gotten ugly.

Is Jon Lieber the answer? It is a nice option to have him in long relief for whenever one of our "shaky" starters can't get through the early innings.
