Who is going to replace Ron Santo as Cubs radio announcer?

The passing of Ron Santo was a very sad day for Cub fans and baseball fans in general. Santo brought so much passion to the game when he was a baseball player for the Cubs, and he carried that same passion to the radio announcers booth.

Nobody can "replace" Ron Santo, but there will be baseball and Cub fans need someone to carry the torch and team up with Pat Hughes to bring them play by play radio broadcasts of Cubs games.

So who is going to replace Ron Santo as the Cubs radio announcer? The proud privilege goes to Keith Moreland, the former right fielder who played for the Cubs. I really feel that this was a good choice for the Cubs organization and for their fans.  I am fortunate enough (or should I say old enough) to remember Keith Moreland play for the Cubs.  He was a passionate ballplayer that always gave the best of his ability!

Growing up I recall and interview with Keith Moreland which was about the Cubs asking him to play third base even though he had played all of his professional career as a right fielder. He said "You know, I'm not going to be Mike Schmidt over there, but gosh darnit, I'm not going to be a bad third baseman!" I don't recall the reason that Moreland was being asked to play third base, but he did so without any complaints. In fact when the team needed him Moreland played first, and on a few emergency occasions he filled in at catcher!

They called Moreland "Zonk" when he played, after Miami Dolphins running back Larry Csonka. In the minor leagues nobody could tackle him at the hotel pool, and that's where the "Zonk" nickname got it's origin.

Chicago Cub fans will miss Ron Santo calling the games with Pat Hughes, but there is a new Cubs fan in town who is passionate and wears his heart on his sleeve. Keith Moreland isn't going to "replace" Ron Santo, he is going be himself and bring a new energy to town and a new picture will be painted as we listen in our Cars and households. 2011 Cubs baseball is back, and I'm sure Cubs baseball  fans will welcome a new voice to Chicago with open arms.
